LOS ANGELES - August 31, 2005 - It's not every day that you see a partnership develop between a strong urban developer and a non-profit organization. For downtown Los Angeles, that day has come with a unique partnership between the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles and The South Group. Just recently, The South Group and the YWCA finalized an agreement that caused $8 million to flow to a new campus for the YWCA's Job Corps facility, which will include 200 units of affordable housing. This "Urban Campus" will encompass almost an entire city block in downtown LA - an area bounded by Olympic, Hill, 11th , and Olive - and provide housing for 400 at-risk youth.

"Projects like the Urban Campus would be impossible without the full cooperation of our partners," stated Faye Washington, CEO of the YWCA of Greater Los Angeles. "We are pleased that the private sector has come forward to support our youth."

The South Group is the leading developer of new condominium projects in downtown Los Angeles, with more than 1,700 housing units planned or underway. A collaboration between two Portland, Oregon-based urban innovators, The South Group entered the downtown LA market two years ago with the goal of creating a unique, eclectic, and environmentally sustainable residential and retail neighborhood.

"The South Group's donation of $8 million to the YWCA Job Corp program reflects our commitment to the community and its citizens," says Tom Cody, principal of The South Group. "As developers, we recognize that secure, affordable housing will help individuals and families in need to achieve healthy and productive lives -- this is critical to the quality of our Downtown neighborhood."

Administered by the U.S. Department of Labor, Job Corps is one of the Nation's largest and most comprehensive residential education and job training programs for at-risk youth, ages 16 through 24.

For the last 39 years, YWCA/GLA has provided housing for its neediest Job Corps students (approximately 350 individuals) at two residential facilities in downtown Los Angeles and Hollywood. Additionally, the YWCA has been empowering women, developing youth, and strengthening families for 110 years in Los Angeles.

The Center serves approximately 900 Job Corps participants per year. The average Los Angeles Job Corps enrollee is 20 to 24 years old and has completed 11th grade. Of all Los Angeles Center participants, 60% are female and 40% are male. Most come from Target Empowerment Zones. The success of the Los Angeles Job Corps Center is reflected in its 95% job placement rate.

About the YWCA

The YWCA of Greater Los Angeles (YWCA/GLA) is a women's membership movement built on the mission of elminating racism and empowering women. Over 60,000 individuals a year are reached by the YWCA through various programs including affordable child-care, after school youth programs, the LA Job Corps, and Sexual Assault Crisis Service center located in Compton. For 110 years the YWCA/GLA has been pursuing this bold mission in LA communities. For more information, visit www.ywcala.org
