LOS ANGELES - April 20, 2005 - Gerding/Edlen, a partner in The South Group, the development company responsible for what is planned to be downtown L.A.'s first LEED TM certified residential building, recently received gold LEED certification from the U.S. Green Building Council for The Henry Condominiums in Portland, Oregon.

Only the third residential building in the United States to achieve this rating for sustainable design and construction, the Henry is part of the Brewery Blocks neighborhood, a model for sustainable urban redevelopment. The project incorporates environmentally friendly materials in addition to energy efficiency and transportation options.

The South Group is applying many of the same principles to its projects in downtown L.A. including Elleven, which broke ground in September 2004 and is expected to be complete in the summer of 2006. Luma, the 19-story phase adjacent to Elleven, due to break ground in August 2005, combines the two towers with 400 units built atop parking.

The South Group's projects, with more than 1700 housing units planned and projected investments that exceed $500 million, are a focal point in the revitalization of downtown L.A.

"As a company, The South Group is committed to sustainability--we see it as an investment in our communities, a critical legacy, and believe it's the future of the industry," said Tom Cody, principal of Gerding/Edlen.

The South Group fosters an "eco-friendly," progressive approach to urban living with innovative and environmentally sustainable residential and retail development.

Elleven and Luma will feature an abundant use of natural light, use of low-emitting materials and finishes, water efficient fixtures, appliances and landscaping, odorless paints and bamboo floors, an aggressive waste management plan that ensures that the majority of materials leaving the site are recycled and dozens of other innovations incorporated into the project to create quality of life advantages for new homeowners.
